Linguistic Evidence for Primogeniture and Ranking in Proto-Oceanic Society      ( 152 visites depuis le 15-02-2003 )
Auteur : HAGE, Per - Titre : "Linguistic Evidence for Primogeniture and Ranking in Proto-Oceanic Society" Oceanic Linguistic, Vol. 38, no. 2(1999) - Serveur : Muse Project - Format : pdf - Thèmes : Comparatisme - Langues austronésiennes - linguistique
EXTRAIT : The presence of a seniority distinction in Proto-Oceanic sibling terminology has been used as evidence for primogeniture and ranking in Proto-Oceanic society. Cross-culturally, however, sibling terminologies with the seniority distinction are very common, found in egalitarian as well as ranked societies. A stronger argument can be made. If Proto-Oceanic society was based on primogeniture and ranking, the term for elder sibling should be marked in Oceanic terminologies. There is both diachronic and synchronic evidence in support of this hypothesis...

Proto-Micronesian Kin Terms, Descent Groups, and Interisland Voyaging      ( 130 visites depuis le 15-02-2003 )
Auteur : HAGE, Per - Titre : "Proto-Micronesian Kin Terms, Descent Groups, and Interisland Voyaging" - Oceanic Linguistic, Vol. 41, no. 1(2002) - Serveur : Muse Project - Format : pdf - Thèmes : Micronésie - Linguistique - Comparatisme - Peuplement
EXTRAIT : In a typological approach to culture history, Murdock (1948) argued that Proto-Micronesian society was “Hawaiian” in type, with generation- Hawaiian kinship terminology (parent = parent’s same sex sibling, sibling = cousin, child = sibling’s child), bilateral kindreds, bilocal residence, and the absence of unilineal descent groups.

Tattooing, Gender and Social Stratification in Micro-Polynesia      ( 212 visites depuis le 28-09-2002 )
Auteur : Per Hage, Frank Harary, Bojka Milicic- Titre : "Tattooing, Gender and Social Stratification in Micro-Polynesia", Journal of the Royal Anthropological Institute, Vol. 2, No. 2. (Jun., 1996), pp. 335-350 - Serveur : JSTOR - Thèmes : Micronésie - tatouage - organisation sociale
EXTRAIT : Gell's combinatorial analysis of variations in tattooing practices and social organization in Polynesia is shown to be incomplete. Our purpose is to revise and generalize Gell's analysis and extend it to include the historically related societies of nuclear Micronesia. The discovery of the missing Micronesian variations has important implications for comparative studies of symbolism and social stratification in Oceania, and illustrates the advantages of combinatorial methods in anthropology.
